Insights:
There are general lapses in character that create unnecessary risk if not monitored. There should be systems in place to limit unnecessary risk. In a corporate setting there should at a minimum be valuable input from the Chief Risk Officer. Diversity of thought can be beneficial to limit risk as it can minimize bias. Need a system to detect, assess, and respond to risk. I’m curious how my perception on this book changes over time. Mental models are a topic that I’m interested in and I did not feel there were many novel concepts addressed in this book.

  • Identifying risks without making necessary structural changes to address them is a continued problem
  • The environment is getting more complex, as a result we need systems to effectively deal with complexity
  • Risk should be analyzed at all levels. Need to have effective communication systems in place to respond rapidly to identified concerns
