Training:
This past week I started easy strength. This should take me through the end of my time away from home. I strained my back about a week and a half ago and felt like this was a reasonable next step to allow that to take time to heal. This past week I’ve been doing KB squat/swings, Incline Bench, Sumo Dead’s, Pull ups, Double KB Squats, Farmers walk and hanging leg raises. The program goes quick. I maybe complete it in about 30 minutes. Then I have gone out and done a zone 2 run for 2 miles – try to keep HR below 145. The pace for this is around 10min/mile. The only other thing I modified was I think on Saturday I’m just going to hit a couple bench sets of 225×10 and squat 315×10. I feel like these should be easy numbers for me to hit and I don’t think they’ll mess up the program.
BJJ: Taught 3 lessons this past week. My last one I got kneed in the face. Thankful I didn’t break my nose, but I have a large abrasion. Training has been overall pretty marginal. It’s better than nothing, but it’s challenging trying to be the one teaching every lesson.
Diet: Weight has stabilized around 204lb. Feel like this is the leanest I’ve been in a long time. At times I worry this lower body weight makes me less durable. I do think being closer to 200 makes it easier to run.
Sleep: Has been up and down the past month and this past week was not good. Was back down to just 6:09 hours asleep and time in bed was 7:21. A lot less efficient this past week. I’m hoping to be in bed early tonight allowing for a good start to the week.
Stress: Interestingly my readiness score has been up around 78 the past week even though sleeps been trash. I feel so-so. I’m ready to be home. Did a lot of stuff for work the past week which has my mind not on my current assignment. I fairly quickly revert back to old habits. My wife had her 20 week ultrasound which went well and this gave me joy and relief.
Learning: Still reading a ton. I’m finding I need to prioritize my medical reading. When I read something enjoyable I get addicted and crank it out. This has happened maybe 3 or 4 times on this mobilization. I finished Norm’s book, Watchmen and Fearing and loathing in Las Vegas in a sitting. Started reading Robert Gates book on Leadership and it’s giving me some perspective on navigating bureaucracy.
