Lesson: The backslide

Reflection:

The ups and downs of life are never ending. They happen on a micro level on a daily basis and they can be greatly influenced by events such as taking a new job, relationships, starting a schooling program. In each of these chapters of our lives there will be trials which we often view as a valley or low. These valleys are often viewed as negative, but I’ve continually found them to be the greatest motivator of change. In our American society these valleys often need to be manufactured through exercise, schooling, or the entrance of relationships. In other environments there is not as much choice in the matter.

So how do we maintain our course when at times we lose motivation, face trials, and feel exhausted. The solution comes from simple daily habits, knowing our values, and keeping our eye on the goal. The development of our habits, solidifying our values and developing goals is challenging in its own right. I think sorting out these three categories can be a lifetime of challenge.

When we backslide in exercise, faith, education, relationships we should start small. Do a quick workout, pray, read 1 page or tell someone that you love them. Then try to repeat these small tasks daily. Try to see how long you can go without missing a day. This will solidify the habit over time. Time and compounding are the most magical parts of our existence.
