Rolling Reflections 17

My reading habit has been lacking as of late and I’m a little disappointed in my lack of productivity over the weekend. Only thing to do is review what happened and move forward. It frankly came down to not getting the basics done first thing in the morning. As a result of putting them off, they didn’t get done. I need to get the reading in first thing in the morning, even if it’s just 30 minutes or an hour.

Lesson: Aging is a disease that can be treated
I’m struggling to play with this concept. They repeatedly state in the book that many people have the accepted belief that aging and death are the normal part of life. That we need to die and have a new generation take over. Sinclair supposes that aging can be negated or at least the signs of aging avoided. I think I struggled because much of what he argues is the result of scientific progress such as our “progress” in treating cancer is marginal at best. This has been addressed in Peter Attia’s podcast and in the New Biology of Cancer. There’s been minimal progress in cancer treatment with a targeted gene therapy approach. I’m currently more in favor of early detection and lifestyle modification.

Lesson: The best look at the best to get better
This morning at grappling one of our black belts was there to critique where I was at with some of the fundamental classes I was teaching. He is much better than me and it was interesting hearing his perspective. His lesson was when you know your strength and you add something to your game, you always tailor it back to your strength. I think this point became even more clear today. His outlook was on creating webs from a position of strength. My translation is you always have a central point of knowledge. Maybe this is your background or innate personality. You will take in information that challenges you but you always take it on with a framework from your past experiences and perspective. You will always look at new information with the lens of your past. It can be challenging to start over. This places increased emphasis on a solid foundation.
