Week 3 Notes – program Post-Deployment Training Program
The Workout: The majority of my training over the past decade has been in the 5-10 rep range. So the 3 sets of 8 felt a lot more familiar. The biggest thing I played around with this week was the load on the carries. My limitation is the KB weights I have at the gym. The highest I have is a 53lb. This is what I used on the waiter carry and I would use multiple light KB to increase the load on the rack walk to the 70lb range. I would use a DB on the suitcase carry to increase the load and was using 115lb. The total time of these workouts were around 1 hour. Intraworkout – I’ve been using John Meadow’s Granite Recovery EAA product. Most of the days I’m training are in the morning and fasted. Pre-workout is a cup or 2 of coffee with a scoop of collagen. Body continues to feel better. Where I feel the most fresh is in my hips. I’m missing a horizontal press as I haven’t really done them in months due to the lock down. So I’m doing a downward dog pose and 5 push ups when I get into the prone correction position. My grip is the thing that I’ve really struggled to add a lot of time with. I think this is because the volume is increasing the most week over week. I think the smarter thing to do in hindsight would be do 45 sec per set day 1, 1 min day 2 and 1:15 on day 3. Because the extra set per week is adding up.
Other training: BJJ has been consistent. Getting a minimum of 3 days per week in. I continue to want to increase the training days as I wanted to increase my focus on BJJ when I got back. It might be a surprise blessing, to keep me from going over board. Achilles is back to normal – rest, eccentrics, and massive doses of omega 3 seem to have helped. Seems like God flipped the summer heat and humidity switch here in Ohio and had acclimatization issues with BJJ on Saturday.
Stress: HR and HRV state that I’m back to pre-covid readiness. Pretty interesting to watch it climb and stabilize with a normal sleep schedule and regular training. Life stress has continued at an above normal level. I’m struggling with the transition back to work more than I expected. The recurrent question over the past 2-3 weeks is, “Am I where I’m supposed to be?” – from an occupational perspective. When it rains it pours from a family health perspective as we’re putting another grandma in hospice. It makes me thankful that I was able to speak with them every couple weeks during my mobilization. It’s also highlighting the fact that I need to record an interview with my grandfathers prior to their passing.
